First: is Austin Energy your utility?

These rebates are for Austin Energy customers. Austin Energy serves the City of Austin and some nearby areas, but many suburbs, including large parts of Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park and Georgetown, get their electricity from other utilities with their own programs. Check the name on your electric bill before planning around a rebate.

What Austin Energy has offered in 2026

Austin Energy's residential rebates change from time to time, and funding is limited, so always confirm current amounts and rules on austinenergy.com before you buy. As of 2026, its published residential offerings included:

AC and heat pump rebate

A rebate averaging about $800 for a qualifying new, energy-efficient air conditioning system.

Home Energy Savings

Whole-home improvement rebates averaging about $3,000, with access to 0% financing.

Heat pump water heater

A rebate for an ENERGY STAR certified hybrid electric water heater.

Smart thermostats

A small rebate on qualifying thermostats, plus bill credits for enrolling in the Power Partner program.

Installers setting a new high-efficiency condenser — Rebates are paid after installation, and only if the system and the paperwork meet the program rules.

Rules that trip people up

Efficiency tiers. The equipment has to meet the program's efficiency requirements, not just the federal minimum.
Electric resistance heat. Austin Energy's AC rebate rules say air conditioning systems with electric resistance heating elements do not qualify.
Post-installation inspection. You must agree to an inspection by Austin Energy after the work is done.
Who gets paid. By default the rebate goes to the customer on the Austin Energy account, though it can be directed to others if requirements are met.
Participating contractors. Some programs require a participating contractor. Ask before you sign.

The federal 25C tax credit that many older quotes still mention ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025. For Austin Energy customers, the utility rebate is now the main incentive.

Where the money goes furthest

Often not on the most expensive equipment. Sealing leaky ducts and bringing attic insulation up to standard reduce the load on the system, so a smaller, less expensive unit can do the job. Austin Energy's own guidance puts the building envelope first for that reason.

Attic ductwork and insulation — Duct sealing and attic insulation often do more for comfort and bills than a higher-efficiency label.

Selling a home in Austin?

Austin's Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure ordinance, known as ECAD, requires sellers of homes that are 10 years or older, inside Austin city limits and served by Austin Energy, to have an energy audit and disclose it to buyers. Getting it right

Ask any installer, before you sign, whether the system qualifies, what efficiency it is rated at, and who files the rebate paperwork. Call and you will be put through to a licensed local HVAC company that can quote a qualifying system.
